The mission of the Lewis County Historical Society is to preserve, present and promote the stories, creations and history of Lewis County NY and its environs – including those of the Tug Hill plateau, the Black River valley and the western Adirondacks – and to use our collections, programming and partnerships to be the North Country’s preeminent institution for historic preservation, local history education and heritage tourism.

250th Time Capsule

The time capsule is here and ready to be filled with photos, messages and other ephemera. Especially those with that represent the U.S. 250th anniversary as celebrated in Lewis County.

We have kits here to give out to anyone with a Lewis County connection. Write down your life’s memories, great events, your family’s roots, your current family, life in Lewis County, or anything else you would like memorialized for a future generation to dig up and open 50 years from now.

Our team is busy taking photos of every community in Lewis County to add to this project. But, if you have a unique photo of a Lewis County event, location, thing or people that you believe should be preserved in our time capsule, please share it with us!

Celebrating 200 Years of the Lowville Village Band

Jessie Szewil composed this history based on newspaper clippings, handwritten journals, and meeting minutes all supplied by the Lewis County Historical Society. Deb Barnard and Pat Brown arranged the display of historical musical instruments from the LCHS collections. The last photo is of the inaugural concert of the Lowville Village Band’s 200th season.
