Historically Lewis

Home of the Lewis County Historical Society

The Lewis County Historical Society has embarked on a Civil War project to gather the data and images of local veterans who enlisted in Lewis County. Assuming we can collect enough data, we hope to combine that with our existing records and, with input from the community, be able to publish the data and photographs.

But we need your help.  “We encourage people to bring in their family photos to be scanned or email the images to us,” said Cole Mullin, the Historical Society’s Office Manager, and “we will try to put together a biography and war record with each image as a permanent record.”

For those uncertain about a relative’s involvement, feel free to stop by the Temple, where research can be undertaken using the New York State veteran’s database. In addition, other valuable research tools include “Where Brave Men Sleep,” a book by Charlie Shaw that lists the service records of known Lewis County Civil War veterans and the location of their burial; and “Lewis County Goes to War!,” a collection of newspaper articles on local Civil War history compiled by Jack Wolfe. Both can be purchased from the LCHS Gift Shop.

For more information about the project or to provide us with your photographs and data, please contact Cole Mullin, Office Manager, at the Historical Society at 315-376-8957 or at hello@historicallylewis.org.
