Historically Lewis

Home of the Lewis County Historical Society

The Lewis County Historical Society’s Preservation Committee has begun a long-term project designed to pull together much of the information we have about the cemeteries and burial grounds of Lewis County, to collect additional information about these sites and to make all of it available in a form that will be most useful to our members and other interested parties. There are over 140 known and identified cemeteries and burial grounds in Lewis County – and undoubtedly there are more – and these cemeteries tell a tale of Lewis County, our communities, our people and our history.

We are accumulating a wide variety information about each cemetery: name or names; town; status of use; date of establishment; number of interments; property size; affiliation; location information, including directions and GPS coordinates; site history and background; presence of historic veterans graves or graves of indigenous people; cemetery condition; restoration efforts; reasons to visit; notable burials; online links; and current and historic photos. If anyone has information, historical documentation or pictures concerning any of these cemeteries or burial grounds – or others that we might not know about – we would appreciate it very much if you would let us know, either by emailing us at hello@historicallylewis.org, calling us at (315) 376-8957 or stopping by the Temple to see us. And certainly, if you would like to volunteer to help with this project, reach out to us, as we’d love to get you involved.
