A spring fishing trip in Osceola made front-page news in the June 1, 1922 edition of The Journal and Republican and Lowville Times. Here cartoonist John Ashton Golden teams with that weekly paper’s anonymous reporter to tell the story in comic-strip form, an entertainment medium which in the 1920s boomed in popularity among daily newspaper readers. Some seventy years later, Andy Byrnes, founding editor of The Adirondack Mountain Sun in Lowville, brought that popular American tradition to his youth-oriented upstart rival to the Journal and Republican, whose publishing lineage in the county dates to 1838. Mr. Byrnes hired our then- 14-year-old cartoonist to create “The Pride,” a superheroes comic strip published from 1994 to 1997. The Adirondack Mountain Sun ceased publication in 2004.
