The Lewis County Historical Society welcomes volunteer support – indeed, we could not do what we do for the County and our communities without it. You might say volunteers are the life blood of our Society.

Volunteer experiences can be tailored to suit you! Some of our current volunteers serve on committees, inventory collections, accession artifacts and historic items, organize files, help with many programs and events, assist with the restoration of Greystone by doing demolition, carpentry and painting, attend to mailings, support our publicity efforts, work with school groups, assist with our technology and social media needs, work on buildings and grounds – and much more.

Two areas in particular where we have a current need for dedicated volunteers:

• Accessioning: this is the specialized and detailed process of creating a permanent record for each of the artifacts and objects offered into our collections, researching the provenance of the artifact, photographing it, and entering the information into PastPerfect, our museum software for collections archiving.

• Grant Writing: so much of what we do is the result of grants we obtain from various sources, and nowhere do we have a more important need than help in writing grant applications. We absolutely need the help of a dedicated grant writer to continue the important work of the Historical Society.

Beyond that, we have just formed three new working groups: (1) an Art Committee, to oversee the Historical Society’s acquisition and display of works of both the fine arts and the art crafts related to Lewis County, as well as to promote those arts throughout the community; (2) an Education Committee, to build upon our relationships with local schools, to develop and put on educational programs, particularly for the young, and to involve students in the Society’s work, programs, and volunteer opportunities; and (3) an Outreach Committee, to strengthen our working relationship with other local historical societies, museums, libraries, agricultural societies, governmental organizations, and interested third-parties, to partner, develop and put on interesting programs with them, and to better approach our joint collections management of the many treasures of Lewis County.
